It’s been nearly 3 years since the first American Beatbox Championships took place in Brooklyn New York. Since the annual event has become the culture’s most anticipated event in the United States. We wanted to give you a glimpse into perhaps one of the most slept on subcultures to pierce the mainstream. When you think of Timbaland and Justin Timberlake’s “My Love” or Michael Jackson talking about his artistic process it’s hard to argue that art form isn’t a powerful creative force in popular music. Yet most people are unaware of the underground scene that has spawned of creating vocal wizardry with ones vocal chords. Imagine a battle that was as physical as a b-boy battle, as dramatic as an MC battle, with the music and sounds of a DJ Battle all done from the VOICE! Truly the American Beatbox Championships blows minds and expectations!

There is no better way to peer inside the art than by talking to the artists and who better than the Godfather of Beatbox, Rahzel. The American Beatbox Championships in partnership with Okayplayer and Flavorpill sat down with the 7x Grammy Nominee and 2x winner who is most widely recognized as one of the legendary members of the Roots. Rahzel’s legend truly comes with popularizing beatboxing internationally on a massive scale. His classic “If Your Mother Only Knew” spawned and inspired a generation of beatboxers. Today the art-form is global and it’s artists ever growing.
The line up continues to get blessed… looks like Toronto is showing NYC some love as Jessica Kaya, Silk Kaya (Eternia), alongside Philadelphia’s soulful crooner Range Da Messenga. Joining the judges table and blessing the mic is Canada’s 2x Beatbox Champion one of the leaders of new skool beatbox KRNFX. If that were not enough Akim Funk Buddha is also bringing his Hip Hop moves to the mix. This is truly going to be a night of Champions!!!!
